What is a Popular Light Switch Style?
A light switch is so much more than just a light switch nowadays, especially when it comes to design and function. As smart technology evolves, so does the apparatus used to control the technology around the home and – of course – it must be stylish.
Bring your entire house décor together and provide the perfect finishing touch with your light switches. Here are the many different light switch styles available.
A Guide to the Different Types of Switches
Single-pole Switch
One of the most common light switch styles is the single-pole switch, commonly used for controlling a single circuit such as light fixture or an outlet from a single wall location. It usually has ON/OFF symbols embossed on the toggle and is very straightforward to operate.
Rocker Switch
Very similar to a single-pole switch, a rocker switch also resembles a seesaw so you press down on one side for on and the other for off. However, the toggle is wider with this design and there are various design alterations you can make to them.
Toggle Switch
A toggle switch is also very easy to use; they have a lever that sticks out from the switch box which can be moved up and down to indicate on and off. Originally patented by William J. Newton and Morris Goldberg in 1916, it is still a popular design today.
Double-pole Switch
Although the double-pole switch looks similar to a single-pole switch with the same toggle design, their functions are what sets them apart. The double-pole switch has the capability of facilitating up to two separate circuits for two or three-way switching and often offer more power. This means it is normally used for appliances such as ovens, washing machines, and refrigerators.
Push Button or Momentary Switch
A momentary push button switch is a type of switch that only completes a circuit when it is pressed. Once the button is released, the circuit is broken. This type of switch is often used for applications where a momentary action is required, such as activating an alarm or starting a motor.
Intermediate Switch
Instead of controlling light fixtures from one location, intermediate switches enable us to control them from two different locations. So, if you’ve got a long hallway, areas with 2 entry points or want to control the light at the top of the stairs when you’re at the bottom, an intermediate switch can help.
Dimmable Switches
Instead of a simple ON/OFF functionality, the dimmable switch adds another edge to your lighting. There are dimmers available for the various types of switches listed above and different styles of dimmable switches including:
- Rotary dimmable switch: a knob you press to turn ON/OFF and rotate to increase or decrease brightness
- Push button dimmable switch: a push control that you press to increase or decrease brightness
